Who needs a translator these days?

The internet has made it so easy to look something up yourself but can you be sure it’s right?

Why me?

I am of English origin and have lived in the Netherlands for almost 40 years. I learned Dutch fairly quickly as I felt the need to express myself in the language of the country I had chosen to live in. Translating for English visitors made me realise just how essential it is to ‘get it right’.

One small mistake can create confusion.

During a conversation an incorrect translation may sometimes be amusing but a written text, put down in black and white has to be precise, if you want to be taken seriously.

I have always been impressed by the standard of English spoken in Holland but am aware that the grammar often causes problems.

How do I work ?

I only translate into my native language so do not translate from English into Dutch. A personal approach is important to me. I like to be in close contact with the client to ensure we are on the right track.

My background means that my preferred subjects are in the social/cultural sector but I am always prepared to take on a challenge.

My fees conform to the standard rate of 0.14 ct per word. A fixed sum for certain projects is negotiable.

My CV

I studied graphic design/illustration at art college in England. I began work as a costume designer and stylist for theatre, film and television after moving to the Netherlands. I was also part of the team at a large costume hire business for many years.

I worked as a text corrector for Excerpta Medica, a medical communications agency. I give English conversation lessons and coach Dutch secondary school students for their English exams.

I am qualified to teach English as a foreign language (TEFL diploma).

My translation work includes a variety of clients, ranging from the Dutch government to private businesses.
